This time when we rode in silence it was because I was concentrating on the feel of his warm hand holding mine. He didn’t just hold it loosely either, he gripped it just enough to make it clear he wanted to keep holding it. For as long as I was willing probably. When we were on his street, the sun was just starting to get a little lower in the sky, giving longer shadows to everything. He slowed when we got to Bri’s house, though, so I looked over to him questioningly, which he answered straight away, “Picking up Bri real quick.” As soon as he said it, Bri came rushing out the front door and racing down the walkway towards the car. Gearden jerked a thumb over his shoulder, telling her to sit in the back, so she opened the passenger door behind him and jumping in.

I pulled my hand away from Gearden’s as I turned in my seat to greet her. “Hey,” I said, smiling a little.

She put mine to shame when she beamed one of her own right back at me, saying, “Hey,” then asking, “How are you?” And signing it at the same time.

It was a simple sentence, easy enough signs, but it was a start to something that would go a long way and it won me a little. Which I’m sure is what she had hoped because her smile beamed a full hundred watts when I signed back, “I’m good. You?”

Gearden must have said something then, though, to make her jerk her eyes to his in the rearview mirror, because she quickly reached over her shoulder for her seatbelt and locked it in. He pulled away from the curb, making his way along the drive to his own home. There were a few extra cars parked along the driveway but still room for him to pull into the garage. We all got out and walked to the door. Bri let herself in while Gearden waited for me on the other side of the car. Holding the door open for me, he let me enter ahead of him. As soon as we entered the kitchen, a couple of younger kids raced past me and around the island counter, each holding a small Nerf gun. Behind me, Gearden was close enough that when he hollered at them, getting their attention, I swung around too, catching what he said to them. “Not in the kitchen, move it to the den.” It didn’t bother them that Gearden, much larger than them, had just raised his voice. Instead, they just scampered out, mischievous smiles still plastered across their faces. They were probably eight or nine. One had dark blonde hair, brown eyes and dimples, while the other had wild brown hair and dark eyes and a deeper complexion. Both were future heartbreakers for sure.

Gearden turned to hang his keys on the wall before turning to me to say, “Popcorn,” and
